Memoir of rural farm life in Colleton County, Walterboro, Charleston, and elsewhere in South Carolina and the United States. Topics discussed include perils of farm life for a young child; accounts of teachers and students from his grammar and high schools (1946-1952); student life at Clemson College (1952-1955); and University of Georgia (1956-1958). Other topics include the draft and deferral of his Army service until completion of college; training at Fort Jackson (1958); service at White Sands Missile Range (1958-1960), located in South-central New Mexico; Soil Conservation Service (1960-1962) at various locations around S.C.; employment at the Charleston Naval Shipyard (1962-1989); and elsewhere.
